When talking about Samosir Island, of course, it cannot be separated from Lake Toba which is so beautiful and enchanting. However, in fact, in addition to Lake Toba, Samosir Island also holds other natural beauty. One of them is Holbung Hill or Samosir Hill.
Holbung Hill itself is located in Huta Holbung Village and is 200 years old. Usually, this village of 500 people also calls Holbung Hill as Teletubbies Hill.
About Holbung Hill Samosir
Holbung Hill is one of the tourist attractions in Lake Toba which is located in the hills of Holbung Village, Sitiotio District, Samosir Regency, North Sumatra. The series of hills of Holbung Hill has existed since 200 years ago.
Route to Holbung Hill Samosir
Getting to this location can be reached via the side path of Sumatra Island or through the Samosir Island route. From Medan City Center, it is 198.7 km via Jl. Jamin Ginting, via Tanah Karo, Brand and Sidikalang routes, or about 6 - 7 hours away. If from the center of Medan City, through the Medan-Tebing Tinggi toll road, Pematang Siantar, Parapat and then Brand and Sidikalang, it will take about 8 hours more with a total of 341 km.
If you are in Pangururan Samosir City, it only takes less than 1 hour to travel with a total of 22.2 km.
From Panguruan, the journey will pass through a relatively narrow hillside. Some parts of the road have been repaired by the local government.
To get to the Bukit Holbung tourist spot, there are two routes that can be taken;
- Medan - Kabanjehe - Telly
- Medan - Siantar - Parapat - Tomok (Samosir)
Heading to the Top of Holbung Hill
To reach the top of Holbung Hill, we have to trek for 10 to 15 minutes. The hill which has 8 hills can be passed by passing through several steps, then a trail that goes up and down.
Although it looks tiring, don't worry. Because, along the way, we will be accompanied by many weeds, as well as a refreshing breeze.
When we have arrived at the top, we will be presented with a beautiful view in the form of a natural panorama from the height and the life of the local community. All beautifully combined with the vastness of the savannah and the refreshing atmosphere.

From the top of the summit we can also see the magnificent Pusuk Buhit and Lake Toba which spoils the eyes. Well, we can also take pictures here with Lake Toba in the background. Surely the results are good!
Not only does it have a beautiful landscape, there are also myths circulating in Holbung Hill. Reportedly, if you are able to climb Holbung Hill to the top or the eighth hill, then the journey of love will go smoothly. However, to conquer the eight hills takes a lot of time and extra energy.
Holbung Hill also offers a tranquil atmosphere, making it suitable for camping. Setting up a tent on a hill with a beautiful view, it is definitely exciting!
Notes for Visitors
Packed with the experience of a vacation to Bukit Holbung Samosir, there are several suggestions that I can share with everyone.
First, we should bring thick clothes and jackets to withstand the fairly strong winds in the Bukit Holbung Samosir area. In addition, thick clothes help us not to get cold considering the air temperature of Holbung Peak which is quite cold.
For those of you who want to fly a drone, make sure to check the wind conditions first. Of course you don't want your drone to run aground due to strong winds. Especially if you want to fly a drone in the afternoon while capturing beautiful sunset moments. Be careful in flying it.
Well, if you want to camp and set up a tent, after obtaining permission from the local manager, try to find a camping location that is not too open. This is to prevent flying tents from being carried by strong winds. In addition, lighting a bonfire will be easier because the wind is not as strong as in an open location.
So, that's the story of my experience on vacation to the top of Samosir Holbung Hill. Happy vacation and see you in other travel stories....
