More Than Just a Vacation: Exploring the Spirit of Literacy at the Besuki Membaca Street Library

If you are on vacation in Situbondo and want to experience another side of this small town that not many people know about, try stopping by the Besuki Membaca Street Library. This is not a tourist spot. Nor is it an Instagrammable spot that is busy on social media. But this is where you can meet young people from Besuki who choose to fight the rapid digital current with one simple weapon: reading books.

Amidst all the hustle and bustle of the digital world and the culture of endless scrolling, this community is here as an oasis for anyone who longs for tranquility, warm interactions, and a real spirit of learning.

Finding a Library on the City Street

Imagine this: a quiet afternoon in Besuki, rows of books neatly arranged on simple tables, small children sitting in a circle reading, while several young volunteers guide them in a small discussion.

There are no grand buildings, no air conditioning, but there are smiles, enthusiasm, and warmth that you can hardly find anywhere else. That is the typical atmosphere of Besuki Membaca, a literacy community that grew from the collective spirit of local youth.

Supported by Paiton Operation & Maintenance Indonesia (POMI) and Paiton Energy, this movement began to take root from the collaboration of communities such as IPNU and IPPNU Besuki, as well as inspiring young figures such as Muhammad Alfi Syahrullah and Muhammad Iqbal. They do not just distribute books, but also spread hope, that reading still has a place in the hearts of the younger generation.

Three-Wheeled Cars, Books, and Big Dreams

One of the most interesting things about this community is the three-wheeled vehicle that functions as a “mobile library”. Alfi, the loyal driver and main driver of Besuki Membaca, brings hundreds of books to various points in the sub-district. From elementary school, junior high school, high school, to college students, everyone can enjoy unlimited access to literacy.

For those of you who are on vacation while looking for a unique experience, joining them around on this three-wheeled motorbike can be an unforgettable adventure. Who would have thought, your vacation could be filled with helping children find their favorite books or just sitting together and reading classic Indonesian fairy tales.

From Cardboard to Big Community

This community started from a simple idea: just books and passion. Back then, their bookshelves were just piles of cardboard on the city sidewalk. But, from there grew a movement that is now known throughout Situbondo.

Iqbal, one of the founders of this movement, recalls how they once only had a dream. “We only had books. Then we thought, how to get young people interested in reading. Yes, we made a street library,” he said. Four years later, they not only have a larger collection of books, but also a strong influence in shaping the reading culture in Besuki.

Besuki Membaca is More Than Just a Book

What makes Besuki Membaca so special is its fun approach. In addition to reading, there are coloring competitions, educational games, and exciting mini discussions.

Children who used to come just out of curiosity are now regular visitors who are thirsty for knowledge. And you, as a traveler, can join in, chat with them, and even share stories about your origins.

So, don't be surprised if you are suddenly asked to be a jury for a coloring competition or join a discussion about a book you've never read before. Everything is fun, spontaneous, and full of laughter.
