I still remember the salty breeze hitting my face as the boat slowly cut through the waves, heading towards a little speck of paradise off the coast of Probolinggo, Gili Ketapang. I had read about its crystal-clear waters, snorkeling adventures, and white sand beaches, but nothing could’ve prepared me for the actual experience.
It was like stepping into a different world, where the sea whispers stories, and time seems to pause. If you're looking for a unique beach escape in East Java that’s not flooded with tourists, this is it.
Where Exactly is Gili Ketapang?
Gili Ketapang is a small island located in Desa Ketapang, Kecamatan Sumberasih, Kabupaten Probolinggo, on the north coast of East Java.
Although “Gili” might make you think of the famous Gilis in Lombok, this one is much closer to Surabaya and offers a surprisingly authentic tropical island vibe.
What makes it even better? It’s not overhyped yet, so you can actually enjoy the beach without having to edit out photobombers.
Reaching Gili Ketapang is actually part of the fun. If you're coming from Surabaya, Malang, or Sidoarjo, you'll need about 2 hours by vehicle to get to Pelabuhan Tanjung Tembaga Barat Probolinggo, which serves as the main departure point to the island.
From there, hop on a local fishing boat-turned-passenger-transport, and in about 30–40 minutes, you’ll touch down on the island. The boat rides usually depart between 06.00–10.00 AM and return trips from the island are scheduled between 13.00–17.00. So yes, plan your day carefully unless you’re up for an overnight island adventure (which, FYI, is totally doable with some planning).
One of the best things about Gili Ketapang is how budget-friendly it is. Here are some of the facilities and excitement in Gili Ketapang and how much money we need to dig into our pockets:
Parking at the harbor and boat transport usually come as a package when you book a local tour, especially if you’re going through a tour operator from Probolinggo.
Now this is where the magic begins. There’s a whole list of fun activities waiting for you:
The water is clear and calm, perfect for beginners. I got to see schools of colorful fish and even a baby sea turtle! Bring your GoPro or rent an underwater photo package. It’s 100% Instagram-worthy.
If you’re the adrenaline junkie type, go for the banana boat or jet ski rides. Screaming across the waves with the wind in your hair is the definition of liberating.
Some locals offer a mini island tour by boat. I joined one that looped around the eastern side of the island—it was peaceful and gave me a completely different perspective of the coastline.
For those of you who live for content, you need to try underwater photography here. The view is awesome and natural sea ecosystem is really wonderfull. The water clarity makes it even more awesome.
Located on the island's east side, Goa Kucing (Cat Cave) is not just a mysterious natural formation but also a historical site linked to Syech Maulana Ishaq, a revered religious figure. It’s a unique blend of spiritual and mythical energy, and if you're into offbeat spots, this one is a must.
Despite being a small island, Gili Ketapang has enough facilities to keep you comfy:
Don’t expect a five-star resort setup, but it’s definitely enough for a satisfying day trip.
Vacationing in Gili Ketapang feels so much fun, right? Hey, but wait, there are some tips that might be useful and make your vacation trip even more exciting!
Absolutely. Whether you're a backpacker on a budget, a content creator hunting for hidden gems, or just someone craving the salty air and a break from city life, Gili Ketapang delivers big time. Huaah, it must be so relaxing to enjoying Gili Ketapang. My husband has been asking us to come here, but we haven't found the right time yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm also not really sure weather it's save or not for the children.
Indeed, Gili Ketapang offer really awesome view and experience. One key thing before visiting Gili Ketapang is to set up a nice travel plan due to it's location that must be traveled by boat.
DeleteIs it safe to bring children? From some stories of my friend who lives near Probolinggo, this tourism is safe for children. One thing to notice and must not be forget is to bring medicine to anticipate motion sickness from the local fishing boat. It's really shaky along the way, mbak.
