A Travel Writer's Guilty Plea and the Solution

As a travel writer, I have a confession to make: I am a terrible packer. While many people take pride in fitting a week’s worth of clothes into a small backpack, I often find myself juggling multiple large suitcases on every trip. It's not uncommon for me to hear, "Moving in, are we?" as I struggle with my luggage.

Thankfully, there is a solution—enter the concept of a 'holiday stylist.' I decided to try this out and reached out to Deni Kiro, who offers a 'Style & Pack Travel Capsule Wardrobe' service. I'm meeting her soon before my upcoming honeymoon in Rome and the Amalfi Coast, so the pressure is on.

The process begins with a phone call where we discuss my budget and holiday plans. Deni reviews my Instagram feed to understand my personal style. I also complete a detailed questionnaire about my favorite colors, current wardrobe (which includes gym wear, jeans, plain tops, and dresses), where I usually shop (Zara, ASOS, and H&M), and what I would never wear (Crocs).

The questionnaire also asks about my biggest shopping challenge. As someone who is 5ft 1in with short legs and a big bum, I find it difficult to dress my lower half. I also provide a Pinterest board that showcases the effortlessly chic Italian vibe I'm aiming for, along with a close-up of my face.

We meet at Zara on the King’s Road in London, where Deni explains that everyone has a 'color palette' based on their complexion. She shows me a photo of Margot Robbie and tells me that, like Barbie, I have a 'cool complexion' and suit neutral, light pinks, blues, as well as black and white.

She emphasizes that neutral colors act as the 'magic glue' for a successful travel capsule wardrobe, allowing for easy mixing and matching. However, she also suggests adding some pops of color that complement your palette.

Deni had already checked out Zara for my perfect outfits, so we simply stroll in, and she gathers a collection of beautiful linen dresses, trousers, and skirts. We head to the changing room, where Deni explains the importance of having day-to-night outfits. I love three options: a blue dress, a white crochet frock, and a coral dress. Each can be worn with flats for sightseeing and paired with heels in the evening, effectively turning three outfits into six.

Next, we focus on finding the perfect 'bottom half' that can go with any top. We settle on a plain white linen skirt. Then, we tackle the 'airport outfit.' Deni advises that when traveling, it's essential to consider your look from the moment you leave. I've never really thought about this before, just throwing on trackies. But Deni finds a pale blue matching co-ord that is comfortable for a flight and can double as a light jacket.

For shoes, the key is to find stylish sandals in a neutral color that work with everything, one pair of heels if desired, and to wear gym trainers on the flight. I choose some brown flat sandals.

Finally, accessories. Deni selects a pair of statement earrings and bangles, plus a lovely little raffeta bag. These go with every outfit.

At the till, I feel a bit sick at the price (nearly £500), but Deni reassures me that although it's expensive, I now won't need to think about my holiday wardrobe for a long time. The biggest shopping mistake, she says, is last-minute impulse buying of clothes you'll never wear again.
