A Journey Through Time on the Nile

The ancient ruins of Dendera Temple echo with the words, “What happens on this tour here, stays here.” But for this traveler, the experience is too profound to remain a secret. This holiday is more than just a trip; it's a living history lesson, where the legends of Pharaohs and the majesty of the Nile combine to create memories that will last a lifetime.

It’s our first-ever cruise, and with Death on the Nile as our favorite film, a journey down the iconic river to discover ancient Egypt with our very own Egyptologist—Suzanne, who doubles as a mother, friend, entertainer, and educator—was the perfect choice. The ship, Viking Aton, sets the tone for an unforgettable adventure, blending modern comforts with a deep respect for history.

Discovering Cairo and the Egyptian Museum

Our journey begins in Cairo, where we visit the incredible new Egyptian Museum. Here, we get up close and personal with preserved mummies, witnessing the artistry and mystery of ancient Egypt. It’s a powerful start to our adventure, setting the stage for what lies ahead.

As we sail toward Luxor, we disembark to explore the temples of Karnak and Luxor, connected by the imposing Avenue of the Sphinxes. The temple of Karnak took 1,300 years to build, with work starting in the 16th century BC. Walking among its towering columns and ancient walls feels like stepping onto a giant film set. Suzanne shares stories of how local children once played on the sphinxes, placing planks over their backs to play see-saw, adding a touch of whimsy to the grandeur.

The Valley of the Kings and King Tutankhamun

The next day, we visit the legendary Valley of the Kings, the burial ground for Pharaohs. We are the last few people ever to view the body of King Tutankhamun in his tomb before scientists remove it due to a newly discovered fungus. It’s a sobering moment, reflecting on the life of a young ruler who died at just 19. His tomb, hastily adapted from his financial adviser’s plans, is a testament to the suddenness of his death.

Inside the tombs of Ramesses III, Queen Seti II, and Thutmose, the cool stillness contrasts sharply with the heat outside. Beautiful depictions of ancient artists, carefully drawn in pencil before vibrant colors were added, leave us in awe. The silence is broken only by gasps of admiration and whispers of wonder.

Exploring More Ancient Wonders

After a refreshing ride in air-conditioned buses, we visit the desert house where famous archaeologist Howard Carter lived while searching for Tutankhamun’s tomb. Suzanne recounts how a small child discovered the tomb by chance in 1922, when they were banging a stick into the ground. Carter’s modest home remains unchanged, offering a glimpse into a different time.

Next, we explore the massive temple of Queen Hatshepsut, one of the most surreal backdrops I’ve ever seen. Shore excursions include bartering in local markets, where Suzanne helps us navigate the lively exchanges, resulting in bargains from dresses and scarves to handmade washbags.

A Cruise Like No Other

Returning to the ship, we settle into our stateroom on the Viking Aton. Sliding glass doors open to a private balcony overlooking the Nile, with comfortable armchairs to enjoy the view. Inside, the stylish Nordic theme features mid-century leather armchairs, wood-effect wardrobes, and a decent-sized bathroom. Fresh fruit by day and chocolates waiting each evening make for a luxurious entry-level experience.

The ship offers a range of activities, from optional lectures on Egyptology to workshops on Arabic and hieroglyphics. Learning how to write my name (Amanda) using a vulture, owl, water, and hand was a fun and enlightening experience. Suzanne rewards those who answer questions with small scarab sweets, making learning enjoyable and engaging.

Experiencing the Magic of the Nile

Each day brings new sights as we travel from Luxor to Aswan. Sitting on our balcony, we marvel at the beauty of the Nile, watching children splash in the water. An early morning hot-air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings is a breathtaking option, though we choose to watch the colorful blobs rise with the golden sun instead.

For fans of Death on the Nile, there’s a special treat: a taxi ride to the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, where Agatha Christie wrote her famous murder mystery. A tour of Agatha’s Suite, complete with a stunning balcony view, and a drink of Agatha Christie cocktails—a blood-red mix of gin, peach juice, and hibiscus—is a bucket-list moment.

A Community of Travelers

One of the surprises of the cruise is the diverse group of passengers. From teenage girls having a whale of a time to a lad celebrating his 18th alongside a grandmother turning 87, the atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive. Making friends is easy, whether it’s a Top Gun pilot from America or fellow travelers from around the world.

This first cruise has been an incredible experience, combining romance, adventure, and unforgettable moments. With fantastic food and drink, it’s also great value. For anyone pondering a trip to remember, this is a must.
